Greenberg's study has had a profound impact on Chinese linguistics and has caused heated debates in the past two decades. Many of them cite the ba-construction as evidence for their point of view. This study first points out that Greenberg's typological scheme is only a list of word order characteristics.
This would be the fallacy of affirming the consequent. In this study, I then clarify the issue of ba-construction and further analyze the usage of verb copying. From the perspective of topic-comment relations, I found that both ba-constructions and verb copying structures mark their objects as secondary topic. More specifically speaking, all the OV or SOV order types are marked structures in Mandarin Chinese in the sense that they transpose the object to the front of the verb for certain pragmatic purposes, such as emphasis or topic functions.
On this verb copying in mandarin chinese basis, I conclude that it is inappropriate to use ba-construction as evidence to argue that Chinese is an SOV language. In order to test this thesis, I collected and analyzed written and oral texts of native Chinese speakers.
The statistical results show that in both written and oral texts, the SVO order verb copying in mandarin chinese alwaysdominant Written: Such empirical data suggests rather convincingly that contemporary Chinese is an SVO language.
This conclusion is supported by evidence from other studies, for example, child language acquisition and data from historical linguistics.
